Wartime memories (WW2) at Burghead School

Hettie was born in 1932 so she was 7 years old as the war started in 1939. Hettie remembers practising for gas attacks during World War Two. She doesn’t remember many airraids. There were many more in Aberdeen and other cities. When the siren did rings it was very scary. The gas masks were quite clostrophobic to wear. Her family were registered for a record card and clothing coupons. They lived in Dunbar Street and there was a small wooden shelter in the garden. Just up the street was a concreate based air raid shelter. There is a house on the site now.
