Brenda Kiernan’s work as an office receptionist

“I left school in 1957 when I was 15 and worked in the coal office in Maplethorpe.  There weren’t many jobs around at the time so I was very lucky to get it.  I was the only one in the office and had to do all the accounts, typing and answering the phone.  I had to deal with the coalman who was rather dour.  I worked 9-5 and had half an hour for lunch but just stayed in the office as it was nice and warm.  I left after a year to get married and they gave me a guinea as a wedding present.  I got paid 30/- per week and just had Sundays off.  I can’t remember about holidays.”
