Mary was born in Ireby near Carlisle and Keswick. Her first jon was at the age of 16 in 1941 for the Ministry of Food in Wigton. She issued ration books once a year. There were buff ones for adults, blue ones for 5-14 years and green for under fives. She worked from 9-6 p.m. and had weekends off. She went to dances on Friday and Saturday nights. The cinema was five miles away and was too far to travel to.
